Hong Kong Human Rights Arts Prize 2020

  1. ELIGIBILITY

The Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize and its student category (together, “HKHRAP”) 2020,  is administered by Justice Centre Hong Kong (“Justice Centre”), and is open to all Hong Kong residents aged 16 years and over with the exception of Justice Centre staff and board members. There is a separate category for Hong Kong-based high school and secondary students. In order to be judged in the student competition, artwork will need to be submitted in the “HKHRAP-Student” category. The HKHRAP 2020 do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race or ethnicity, color, national origin, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, artistic training or background.

  1. HOW TO ENTER

– Entry forms must be completed online via the entry system on https://hongkonghumanrightsartsprize2020.artcall.org/
– There is a limit of up to 5 entries per artist.
– Please complete one entry form online for each new artwork as follows: Upload a clear image of your artwork (must be saved as jpeg, and at least 1 MB/300dpi). If you are submitting a video entry, please upload a jpeg image (at least 1MB/300dpi) of a still from your video, and include a web link to your video or share it with artsprize@justicecentre.org.hk via an online file-sharing site.
– If your entry is a series of multiple images or artworks, please email the images to artsprize@justicecentre.org.hk after submitting your online entry form, clearly stating your name.
– After completing the online form, you will receive an email confirmation of your online entries.
– Email artsprize@justicecentre.org.hk with any technical difficulties.

  1. MEDIUM

The HKHRAP 2020 is open to original artwork in any media (excluding feature-length films). All work entered must be the original work of the exhibitor and proof may be required at the sole discretion of the judges and directors of the HKHRAP 2020.

  1. SUBJECT

The theme of the HKHRAP is Human Rights. This is open to interpretation to the artist and it is not a requirement that the artwork deals specifically with situations in Hong Kong.

  1. PRIZES

All prizes for the adult category will be awarded by a one-time vote of the judges as follows: the work receiving the highest number of votes is the winner of the HKHRAP 2020; 1st runner-up is the work that receives the second highest number of votes; 2nd runner-up is the work that receives the third highest number of votes. The student category will be judged separately from the adult category. The decision of Justice Centre on all matters relating to the judging, vote and competition will be final. Justice Centre, HKHRAP 2020 staff and judges are not obliged or bound to enter into any communication whatsoever regarding such decisions. Artists or their representatives are forbidden to approach judges regarding their entry prior to the prize announcement; doing so will result in immediate disqualification.

  1. SHORTLISTED WORK AND NOTIFICATION

Artists whose work is shortlisted are respectfully requested to donate the artwork to the Justice Centre for sale, with all proceeds allocated to further the organization’s pro-bono work in Hong Kong. A receipt for the value of the work can be given to the artist for tax purposes. Shortlisted artists will be notified after the exhibition period by email.

  1. SALE OF ARTWORKS/AUCTION

All works exhibited at the HKHRAP  2020 exhibition will be for sale at a mutually agreed price by the artist and the HKHRAP 2020 organisers. A silent or live auction will be held during the exhibition period.

  1. EXHIBITION

All shortlisted works must remain on show for the duration of the exhibition period.

  1. PREPARATION OF ARTWORK

a) The shortlisted artist’s name, address and phone number, the title of work must be clearly marked on the back of each work (if applicable) or with accompanying documentation.
b) Shortlisted artists are responsible for covering the cost of delivery of their artwork to the venue prior to the opening of the event, ensuring their pieces are packaged suitably as Justice Centre cannot accept any liability for loss or damage.
c) If submitting an artwork that is to be exhibited framed, the artist must cover the expenses for professional quality framing.
d) Shortlisted artists are responsible for the delivery, hanging and/or installation of their work, with support from the venue staff, ensuring their pieces are displayed securely as Justice Centre and venue provider cannot accept any liability for loss or damage.
e) In the event of video art being shortlisted, the artist must provide the necessary hardware to display the piece.
f) Each piece must be signed by the artist, if applicable, and/or include a signed certificate of authenticity in absence of a signature.

  1. RECEIPT OF SHORTLISTED ENTRIES

Receipt date of entries will be advised after the shortlist is announced. Entries must be delivered at the expense of the artist to the exhibition venue: The Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, Hong Kong Arts Centre, 2 Harbour Rd, Wan Chai

  1. COLLECTION OF UNSOLD ARTWORKS AFTER EXHIBITION

Exhibitors must collect their unsold works after the exhibition period (TBC) at their own cost. Justice Centre will not be responsible for works not collected by the advised time.

  1. CARE AND RESPONSIBILITY

Justice Centre and venue will exercise all reasonable care with works submitted, but will not be responsible for the loss of or damage to any work while in its custody or in transit to and from the office or venue.

  1. COPYRIGHT

Justice Centre reserves the right to photograph works shortlisted and exhibited at the HKHRAP 2020 exhibition for the purpose of documentation, current and future promotion, educational, publicity or other purposes. As part of the conditions of acquisition of the shortlisted, runners-up and winning work, the artists grant license to Justice Centre to reproduce the image of the work in electronic and printed forms and for general publicity purposes. The artist will maintain copyright over all commercial reproductions of their winning work. All necessary acknowledgments of authorship will be made.

  1. PRIVACY POLICY

The personal details requested on this form will only be used for the purpose of processing your application, keeping records, and establishing your identity in accordance with Justice Centre’s Privacy Policy. The information is restricted to Justice Centre staff, board members and HKHRAP 2020 staff, judges and other authorised people.

  1. INTERPRETATION OF THE RULES

In the event of a dispute regarding the interpretation of conditions, the decision of Justice Centre Hong Kong shall be binding on all parties.
